Four Winds Bermagui - Music In Nature

Greetings from Four Winds where we are deep in pre-festival planning and plotting. We are all busy scheduling, confirming, promoting our festival for this year, cleaning, sanding, painting and cutting the grass, with great anticipation and excitement.

With all the recent rain, the site is looking glorious. We cannot wait to welcome everyone back to Barragga Bay for Lindy Hume’s sensational program.

Lindy has a few surprises in store for us this year, not least the addition of contemporary dance, a bevy of local talent and some live theatre.

Over the three evenings of the Festival, Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th, the Sound Shell and amphitheatre will be the setting for a wonderful rendition of Homer’s famous, ageless and epic tale The Iliad, in William Zappa’s The Iliad (Out Loud).

We thought you might all enjoy listening to some tasters of these performances.

An Epic Conversation: two free events for a taste of things to come

Join Creative Director Lindy Hume (AM) and actor/director William Zappa (The Dry, Operation Buffalo, Wolf Creek) for an epic (hour long) conversation exploring Homer’s ancient tale, and diving into Zappa’s stage presentation for the Four Winds Festival at Easter.

As friends, south coast neighbours and colleagues, Lindy Hume and William Zappa have a lot in common, including their love of storytelling.

As Lindy says “This is such a powerful story and Zappa tells it wonderfully. He is such an extraordinary narrator and actor, that he sweeps us into this incredible landscape of war, love, power-games and flawed humanity in a way that has you hanging on every word.

“Thrillingly, Zappa’s The Iliad (Out Loud), the three-night epic he brings to the Four Winds Sound Shell, is a rare opportunity for festival audiences to experience this ancient tale as it was originally heard, outdoors under the sky and close to the sea. Can’t wait!”

In this preview discussion, William and Lindy will discuss this theatrical treatment of the work, you will hear the inside story of the creative process before being treated to Zappa reading some juicy excerpts of The Iliad (Out Loud).

Four Winds presents two opportunities to enjoy these intimate conversations, absolutely free:

Friday 19th February, 4.30pm at the Tathra Hotel
Saturday 20th February 11am at the Four Winds Sound Shell in Barragga Bay

Note these are free events but require registration. Follow our ticketing link here.
Note the Tathra event has limited places.

If you haven’t been to our Sound Shell yet, this is a wonderful way to experience the beauty of our festival site, without the crowds. Bring a picnic and recline on the grasses amongst the spotted gums and birdsong, enjoying the ancient magic of story-telling.

My adaptation of The Iliad is made for speaking out loud. Presented as part of the 2019 Sydney Festival, it is nine hours long and was performed in two formats at Belvoir Street Theatre; in three parts over three nights and an all-day marathon. The production was then invited to the Adelaide Festival 2020 and was the last production before COVID lockdown shut all the theatres.

We are counting down the days to the Festival now, purchase your tickets soon and join us at Nature’s Concert Hall!
