Four Winds Bermagui - Music In Nature

Virna Sanzone Quartet

#Jazz-Soul // Suitable for all ages // Food Truck & Bar from 1:30pm

Deeply soulful, yet with the ability to sail effortlessly through the most intricate jazz melodies, Virna Sanzone is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most captivating vocalists.

Virna will be joined by her long-time collaborators and three of Sydney’s most esteemed musicians, pianist Matt McMahon, bassist Jonathan Zwartz and drummer Hamish Stuart.

With a sensitivity, spontaneity and synergy that can only come from years of collaboration, together they will breathe new life into much-loved standards and effortlessly reinvent little-known gems. This will be an afternoon of exploratory, multicultural jazz and soul-infused music at its finest.

“Sanzone has a voice like the caramel layer in a piece of caramel slice…so smooth, warm and pliable…and you’d definitely want a second serve with another piece to take home. It’s rich and beautiful.”

Lissa Christopher, SMH

“Playing with Virna Sanzone is a creative privilege. Virna has an incredible sound with lots of emotion and musical intelligence. She is a great artist.”

Kevin Hunt (pianist)

Virna Sanzone

Deeply soulful, yet with the ability to sail effortlessly through the most intricate jazz melodies, Virna Sanzone is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most captivating vocalists, both as a leader and as a collaborator. She has featured extensively at festivals around the country such as the Sydney Festival, Stonnington Jazz Festival and SIMA Women’s International Jazz Festival, and has been an integral part of projects that have seen her move across a broad range of genres, working with an impressive list of Australian greats.

Born in Sydney to Sicilian and Armenian / Chaldean parents, Virna grew up in a multilingual household that was as diverse musically as it was culturally. From a young age, she found herself drawn to jazz and soul, recognising these as providing a pathway to musical freedom and a profound means of musical exploration and expression. Virna went on to study Jazz Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she has held the position of Jazz Vocal Lecturer since 2014.

Virna spent her formative years singing with Sydney’s godfather of soul Jackie Orszaczky and has continued to enjoy a busy and diverse performing career ever since. She collaborated with pianist Paul Grabowsky on The Italian Project, breathing new life into songs from her father’s homeland, while Crossroads, her collaboration with pianist Zella Margossian, paid homage to her Armenian mother’s lineage. As well as continuing to perform under her own name, Virna is also in demand as a backing vocalist and has toured and performed with many iconic Australian artists such as Paul Kelly, Richard Clapton and Cold Chisel guitarist / vocalist Ian Moss to name a few.
