Barragga Yangga, meaning “Many Songs” in traditional Dhurga language, is an innovative cultural event curated by Four Winds First Nations Creative Director Cheryl Davison. Hosted and co-produced by Four Winds Concerts on Djiringanj Country, and showcasing newly created material performed by Djinama Yilaga and special guests, with arrangements by conductor and mentor Roland Peelman and musician Heath Cullen – Barragga Yangga is a musical and cultural event not to be missed.
The Barragga Yangga Many Songs Festival is the culmination of a series of residencies held at Four Winds in 2024, bringing community members and artists together to explore storytelling, song learning, and orchestration. Showcasing newly created material performed by Djinama Yilaga and special guests – including Affinity Quartet, Butchulla songman Fred Leone, and Yuin rap artist Gabadu, with arrangements by conductor and mentor Roland Peelman and musician Heath Cullen – Barragga Yangga is a musical and cultural event not to be missed.
Under the guidance of Four Winds First Nations Creative Director Cheryl Davison, the project aims to strengthen the local Community’s connection to their cultural heritage by integrating First Nations stories and traditions into new works. Long term, Barragga Yangga’s mission is to foster cultural exchange, promote understanding across generations, and create a lasting legacy of unity and respect.
The project brings together an impressive group of multi-disciplinary artists to take a deep dive into Dhurga language and culture. Unique collaborations with Djinama Yilaga Choir in the creation of new choral arrangements and songs have culminated in a rich series of participatory workshops and performances throughout the festival weekend. Join us as we celebrate and preserve the vibrant traditions of Dhurga language and storytelling in the beautiful nature setting of Four Winds.
