Supported by the National Museum of Australia’s Cultural Connections Initiative, Four Winds employed their first Aboriginal Creative Producer, Cheryl Davison. Cheryl facilitated a community led project that revitalised and strengthened the cultural practices undertaken by Yuin people at the time of Cook’s Voyage, 250 years ago.
The project’s work reinvigorated the skill and artistry of possum cloak making among Yuin women, revitalised the Dhurga language through song, and restimulated the Yuin practice of choreography – creating dance to enliven their ancient art of storytelling. This project revealed ‘the view from the shore’ – the vibrant Yuin culture that existed when Cook and his men passed by this coast.
What transpired is a story of strengthening and reconnection, of a people reconnecting with their language, with traditional skills and with their Country.
As part of this project the Djinama Yilaga Choir was born. The choir members worked with Dr. Lou Bennett composer and Indigenous Language Scholar to write three new works in Dhurga language and an arrangement for choir member Shakeela Williams’ song, Walawaani for performance at the 2020 Festival. When that festival was cancelled due to COVID-19, the performance project evolved to become the filmed project we share with you here.
Under the creative direction of Cheryl and with the support of Four Winds Create and Inspire program, local film maker Andrew Robinson and his team created three music clips Ganbi, Walawaani and Our Way. A fourth film is scheduled for production.
