‘Playing with the idea of the pentagon, Bonachela has the dancers move at a ferocious speed as they swoop, swirl and leap…it frequently feels as if the dancers have united to become an organic whole. At other times they soar through the air like a group of fireflies’.
Four Winds Festival is proud to present Australia’s premier contemporary dance company, accompanied live by members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship.
Cinco is a stunning showcase of these dancers’ skill, athleticism, virtuosity and sheer brilliance. Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela’s starting point for this work was the five movements of Alberto Ginastera’s String Quartet No. 2. Bonachela created the work on five dancers, hence the name, but has since revised his choreography. For the Four Winds Festival performance on the Sound Shell stage we welcome a brand new 2021 version of Cinco for seven dancers.
A string quartet is like rock and roll for Bonachela, who delights in a quartet’s frantic and fearless virtuosity. Of this piece he says “there is a daring sense of nature… harmony through conflict felt through the music. I want the audience to feel something, it could be wonder or a sense of rebellion, of being very alive, present and in the moment.”
