Returning to Four Winds to lead an extraordinary line-up of performers for our Festival Finale is one of Australia’s most celebrated musicians: composer, performer and multi-instrumentalist William Barton. Having expanded the global horizons of the didgeridoo, and the cultures and landscapes it represents, Barton’s prodigious musicality is underpinned by his Kalkadunga heritage.
This celebratory Finale begins with a powerful explosion of Xenakis played by the superb percussionist Claire Edwardes, followed by William Barton and powerhouse violinist Véronique Serret performing excerpts from their 2020 composition Heartland.
Then, in the shimmering afternoon light, Barton will perform two of his most powerful compositions, Petrichor and Birdsong at Dusk, with a string quartet from Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
The Finale’s conclusion embraces the whole site and audience in an immersive Australian Premiere performance of Tan Dun’s Prayer and Blessing featuring twelve percussionists playing tam-tams, string quartet, soprano Chloe Lankshear, and conducted by Four Winds Artistic Director Matthew Hoy. Created in response to Covid-19 this global work shares a timely message of community, in a text by Chinese philosopher Laozi.
