Four Winds is thrilled to welcome to the Sound Shell one of the world’s finest companies specialising in historically informed opera performance. Australia’s globally acclaimed Pinchgut Opera takes rare and often undiscovered masterpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries and re-creates them in the modern frame, giving contemporary relevance to this exquisite music of the past for today’s audiences to enjoy.
The natural setting of the Four Winds Sound Shell is the perfect setting for this festival centrepiece, Handel’s popular mini-opera Acis and Galatea, first performed outdoors in the summer of 1718 on the terraced gardens of an English country estate where the composer was in residence. Birdsong and rustic revelry surround the shepherd Acis and his semi-divine lover Galatea in an idyllic setting animated by shepherds, nymphs and a raging, jealous giant. It all ends in a celestial transformation!
For this special Four Winds performance, Handel’s gloriously tuneful and delightfully short (just 90 minutes in total) Acis and Galatea is a concert performance with staging by Creative Director Lindy Hume. Pinchgut’s Andrew O’Connor conducts some of Australia’s finest singers, while the Orchestra of the Antipodes will be led by Karina Schmitz. Presented in two parts: before and after your alfresco lunch.
