Artists in Residence

The Four Winds Artists in Residence Program is core to Four Winds philosophy of nurturing young and aspiring artists. Artists and composers in residence at Four Winds are given space to take time out to enjoy the creative environment of the South Coast and to work on their own repertoire in a beautiful place-in-nature at the new Windsong Pavilion.

They also spend time in the local community giving lessons and master classes to local students and teachers. Often, their stay culminates in the opportunity to perform in the Windsong Pavilion, often with other visiting artists to the area.

The String Contingent  – A whole week of musical creativity and improvisation to generate potential new pieces for their album and their upcoming tour. Experimenting with creating music by improvising rather than showing just the finished, perfectly rehearsed piece.

David Hewitt, 2014 2015

We are delighted to announce that acclaimed percussionist, David Hewitt, has been selected as our first Creative Collaborator who will be working at Four Winds in 2014 and 2015. As part of his residency, he will be developing a work called, ‘Ondes’.

David says, ‘ONDES will commence life as a new solo work for percussion, voice and live sound design. It is still in its very early stages of development. I am imagining the idiomatic sound world of ONDES being gradually evolving mesmeric rhythms and vocal melodies, ranging from the ecstatic to the contemplative, waves patiently evolving and ebbing like the seasons.’

Genevieve Lacey, 2015

It was with great pleasure that we welcome Genevieve Lacey back to Four Winds as a Creative Collaborator in 2015. In April 2015, Genevieve spent a week working with audio designer, Jim Atkins, out of the Windsong Pavilion to develop ‘The Pleasure Garden’ a listening garden, and an interactive instrument.

Genevieve describes it as: ‘sounds are brought to life in relation to rhythms of passers by: anyone encountering the garden can play and compose the space, or, simply sink into its beauty and take shelter. Its intentions are gentle, light, and playful. ‘Pleasure Garden’ invites time and space for slow, deep observation and experience, or a few moments of unexpected fun, when discovered by chance, passing through a public place.’
