Four Winds Artistic Director James Crabb has unveiled details of Four Winds Latin Spirit, a festival of exquisite flamenco and tango rhythms performed by some of its finest Australian and international proponents taking place over the Easter Weekend.
Bermagui is known to music lovers for the biennial Four Winds festival of world-class contemporary classical music, and in 2017, as a part of its new all year round program, James Crabb is delighted to present this Latin themed festival: “Four Winds Latin Spirit is the start of a unique creative vision, building diversity and audiences, and I’m honoured to welcome such highly regarded musicians to Four Winds for my first festival.”
Across the Easter weekend, concerts take place in what must be the most idyllic festival space in Australia: 30 acres of wooded parkland hug the Sound Shell, an open-air amphitheatre framed by a lake, and the Windsong Pavilion, a state-of-the-art recital hall whose views gaze onto the stunning natural surrounds. Within these astonishing architecturally designed spaces, uplifting musical experiences are complemented by native bird song, frog calls and the scent of gum trees.
Headlining the festival is a performance by one of Australia’s finest baritones, JOSE CARBO. Born in Argentina, Carbo will perform songs taught to him by his grandfather amongst the repertoire of tango and Latin song, including music by Piazzolla, Gardel and Mores. CARBO was the winner of the prestigious Australian Singing Competition Opera Award and Four Winds is honoured to welcome such a sought after talent.
James Crabb is recognized as one of the world’s finest classical accordion players and proponent of the music of Astor Piazzolla, who created a new form of tango called ‘Tango Nuevo’. For Four Winds Latin Spirit, Crabb is creating TANGO JAM 2, an exceptional group of musicians exploring one of the most dramatic and sensual rhythms of Tango Nuevo, the Milonga: TANGO JAM 2 includes former Brodsky Quartet member and Sydney Symphony violinist ANDREW HAVERON, celebrated guitarist STEPHEN MAGNUSSON, Melbourne pianist, conductor and composer STEFAN CASSOMENOS, multifaceted PHIL STACK on Double Bass and JAMES CRABB on classical accordion.
James Crabb: “As with the legendary Astor Piazzolla quintet who pioneered Tango Nuevo these brilliant musicians come from diverse musical backgrounds. Tango Nuevo is a fusion of classical music forms with jazz harmonies, Latin rhythms and improvisation together with extended instrumental techniques creating a completely new seductive sound world when it evolved in the 60s.”
Also performing at the Festival are RASA DUENDE, a collaboration between internationally acclaimed musicians BOBBY SINGH (tabla), ADRIAN MCNEIL (sarod) and DAMIAN WRIGHT (flamenco Guitar) which explores the rich creative potential of the melodic, rhythmic and aesthetic meeting points between Hindustani and Flamenco music traditions, and BANDALUZIA, an acclaimed modern flamenco music and dance ensemble known for explosive displays of dazzling musicianship and virtuosity. Led by Australian guitarist DAMIAN WRIGHT, BANDALUZIA features percussionist BEN HAUPTMANN, guitarist JAMES HAUPTMANN and two of Australia’s most outstanding exponents of flamenco dancing, JESSICA STATHAM and JOHNNY TEDESCO.
WORKSHOPS will take place on Saturday and Sunday with experts taking participants through the basics of Tango, Flamenco and other Latin rhythms. A FIESTA will take place on Sunday evening for those inspired to learn a few steps, let loose and dance the night away to all things Latin: New Flamenco from Andalusia; mestizo inspired sounds from Barcelona; traditional and electronic tango from Buenos Aires and music from beyond, embracing all the many Latin ingredients to create a sensational musical paella.
