Helping us connect with our own time and place is an original composition and art installation by multi-media artist Damian Barbeler which will feature at the 2018 Festival.
Inspired by Murray Bail’s award-winning novel ‘Eucalyptus’, Damian and his collaborator/designer Tim Jetis have travelled around NSW – including the Far South Coast – collecting images and taking inspiration from the beauty and variety of many hundreds of eucalypts he has visited. A photographic exhibition of some of his stunning images – accompanied by a soundscape – will be installed in Shop 3/24-26 Lamont Street to coincide with Sculpture Bermagui – from Monday 12 March right through until the end of the Festival.
Damian’s music, inspired by this journey of discovery will be premiered at the Four Winds 2018 Easter Festival on Sunday 1 April. He describes the process of collecting images as an important part of writing the music, and reflects that it has helped him better understand the reality of the Bush as opposed to his imagining of it. The incredible and varied colour palette of the eucalypts has been a massive element in creating the music for this 2018 Festival world premiere. Experiencing Damian’s work outside, surrounded by some of the species of eucalypts which have inspired the work will be a truly memorable experience.
Damian Barbeler’s (composer) award-winning compositions have been performed and broadcast around the world, sung and played by leading Australian and international soloists and ensembles. He is widely recognised for his highly idiosyncratic compositional style and especially his lush, emotional sound worlds inspired by textures and patterns from nature. An enthusiastic collaborator, he often works with those working in architecture, software design, media arts and dance and his wide-ranging career has taken him to a diverse range of places from famous concert halls to biscuit factories, boardrooms and far-flung parts of regional Australia.
Tim Jetis is a multi disciplinary Creative Director, designer and visual artist with a portfolio that spans over 30 years working with clients such as Tourism Australia, Tourism Durban, Sydney’s West, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, Sydney Olympic Park, Vivid Sydney, Dark Mofo, Mardi Gras (Sydney) and Accor Hotels.
Creating the exhibition ‘Meaning of Words’ and publishing an accompanying award winning book, his work is also widely exhibited across 3 continents including the Venice Biennale, Osaka Triennial and Print Europe. Alongside his lecturing at Billy Blue College of Design, Tim has actively collaborated with City of Sydney in mentoring teams of young designers to create effective strategies for tackling a variety of social and community issues.
