Born in Darwin Australia, Lloyd Van’t Hoff boasts a career as a vibrant, young clarinettist, chamber musician, collaborator and educator. Based in Melbourne, Lloyd has shared, created and performed music all throughout the world. Performances at the Beijing International Festival of Modern Music (Beijing, China), Menhuin Festival (Gstaad, Switzerland), Young Euro Classic (Berlin, Germany), Grafenegg Summer Music Festival (Grafenegg, Austria) and the Banff Centre (Banff, Canada) have all showcased Lloyd’s versatility as a musician on a global scale.
Closer to home, Lloyd has enjoyed great success having recently won the 2015 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year award. As well as being crowned Young Performer of the Year, Lloyd was presented with the Triffitt Prize, an award bestowed upon an outstanding young individual. He was also a finalist in the Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Romantics competition. A recipient of the prestigious Director’s Prize from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), Lloyd was also a winner of ANAM’s immensely competitive Chamber Music Competition as part of the Arcadia Quintet.
Within Australia, Lloyd is rapidly growing a reputation as one of the country’s finest young chamber musicians and collaborators. Performances at the Melbourne, Perth and Sydney Festivals as well as the Queensland Music Festival have seen him take part in many highly acclaimed productions. Most notably, Lloyd featured in the Aria award winning project, Conversations With Ghosts, alongside singer-songwriter Paul Kelly, Recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey and acclaimed composer James Ledger. As a founding member of the Arcadia Quintet, Lloyd has taken part in festivals all around Australia including the Four Winds Festival, Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, and Huntington Festival. Along with the members of the Arcadia Quintet, Lloyd has been announced as one of Musica Viva Australia’s inaugural FutureMakers.
As an orchestral musician and soloist, Lloyd has performed with many of Australia’s professional orchestras. In 2015, Lloyd was a soloist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra where he performed Copland’s Clarinet Concerto. He was also soloist with Orchestra Victoria as part of their Mostly Mozart series in 2014, where he played Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. Lloyd has been guest Principal Clarinet with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. He has also appeared with Orchestra Victoria, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Lloyd studied the clarinet under the tutelage of Paul Dean, Floyd Williams and David Thomas. A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music Griffith University where he was awarded the highly regarded Postgraduate Award, Lloyd fine-tuned his skills at the Australian National Academy where he participated in the Professional Performance Program and also took part in an ANAM Fellowship. More recently, Lloyd has studied with esteemed pedagogue Yehuda Gilad and has taken masterclasses from some of the world’s finest clarinetists including Andreas Sunden, Andrew Marriner, Michael Collins, Ralph Manno, Martin Spangenberg and Paul Meyer.
