This year, to comply with COVID regulations, Four Winds is taking our Splendid Schools Day into each of our partner schools.

We are really pleased that together we’ve found a way to present music and bring excitement to hundreds of children, in what has been a challenging year.

This year’s Splendid Schools Days also coincides with NAIDOC Week and we are thrilled to present the premiere performance of the Djinama Yilaga Choir as part of the program. The choir will perform the songs they have written collaboratively with composer Lou Bennett, in addition to the song Walawaani, written by young student Shakeela Williams, all in Dhurga language.

Introducing language through song is a great way for children and all of us, to learn and recognise Dhurga words. The songs tell the traditional stories of the land. It’s an honour to be able to present this project to our schools.

On Thursday and Friday the Four Winds Artists in Schools – professional musicians David Hewitt, Robyn Martin, Jacqui Howarth and Tamlyn Magee, – present a participative, percussive rendition of Gordon Hamilton’s Tiny Movements which will premiere as part of this entertaining show. Tiny Movements was commissioned by Four Winds with funds from Festivals Australia.

A fabulous quartet from the Sydney Youth Orchestras, Quart-Ed, will join the schools shows on Friday, at Tilba and Bermagui Schools. This quartet of young, passionate music educators will also be rehearsing with our Bega Valley Youth Orchestra, a session the young strings players are extremely excited about.

In addition to the ‘Schools’ Days, there is a weekend of great activity in the Windsong Pavilion, and a ‘Youth Takeover’, a Saturday evening presentation to parents at the River Rock Restaurant in Bermagui.

On Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th the environmentally aware band Zeeko! Will be heading out to entertain and amaze the Kindergarten to year 2s at local schools.

At the Windsong Sessions on Saturday and Sunday, over 20 performances of highly personal works will be performed by over 50 young people. Although there are no audiences for this years’ events, the musicians are benefiting greatly, in particular from the fantastic resources being created for them by our Digital First Team.

Each student will come away from their weekend performances in the Windsong Pavilion with a professional video recording of their work, which they will have to broadcast, review, study or keep for posterity.

These ‘live’ videos will be released by Four Winds over the coming months, so all can see our local young, enthusiastic and inspiring musicians and composers in action.

This weekend’s Spring Festival is action packed, so follow us and keep up, we’ll be posting plenty of passionate profiles and performances!
