Accompanied down the hill from Canberra by the wonderful conductor Roland Peelman, this will be a heavenly and luminous Christmas moment in the Windsong Pavilion.

The Luminescence Chamber Singers is a virtuosic vocal consort based in Canberra. Since the ensemble’s earliest iteration in 2013, the choir has gained a reputation for presenting exciting and excellent singing, typically performing unaccompanied.

There will be much magic in the air at Nature’s Concert Hall as these sensational voices are lifted into the Windsong’s wings under the direction of Canberra International Music Festival’s artistic director Mr Peelman.

In a year such as this one, the healing nature of beautiful voices combined with Christmas spirit and goodwill should be a fitting moment for us all to give thanks it is finally December, and hope that January will hold new adventures, in music and otherwise.

Performance runs for approx. 75 minutes, without interval. Ticket price includes a drink from the bar and a mince pie, served after the event. Unfortunately due to current Covid-19 restrictions around mass singing, we are unable to do mass carols with the audience this year.

There are no concession tickets for this event.

about The Luminescence Chamber Singers

The Luminescence Chamber Singers is a professional vocal consort based in Canberra, Australia. Since the ensemble’s earliest iteration in 2013 Luminescence has quickly gained a reputation for presenting exciting and excellent singing, performing a wide range of repertoire from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Luminescence seeks to give voice to human experiences of all kinds and to champion to vocal arts as a uniquely human mode of creation and communication.

In addition to a diverse annual concert season, Luminescence appears regularly for the Canberra International Music Festival and for the Four Winds Festival, and has presented performances in some of our most iconic national institutions, including the National Portrait Gallery, the High Court of Australia, and the National Portrait Gallery. Luminescence is also a regular collaborator with conductor Roland Peelman, and has performed alongside many of Australia’s leading ensembles, composers and conductors, including Ensemble Offspring, the Song Company, Gondwana Choirs, Four Winds Festival, Elliott Gyger, Alice Chance, and Carl Crossin. Closer to home, Luminescence delivers regular workshops and local collaborations, including performances many of Canberra’s local choirs and orchestras, including Canberra Sinfonia, Oriana Chorale, Radford College Choir, A Chorus of Women, and the Wayfarers.

about Roland Peelman, AM

Born in Belgium, Roland Peelman has been active in Australia over 30 years as a conductor, pianist, artistic director and mentor to composers, singers and musicians alike.

For his commitment to the creative arts in Australia, he has received numerous accolades, including the NSW Award for “the most outstanding contribution to Australian Music by an individual’ in 2005. In 2006 he was named ‘musician of the year’ by the Sydney Morning Herald and he has since featured regularly as one of the most influential people in the Australian arts scene. Over a period of 25 year years, he transformed The Song Company into one of Australia’s most outstanding and innovative ensembles. In addition, he instigated and directed an impressive list of new work, orchestral, vocal and operatic.

Roland worked for 7 years with Opera Australia (1984-91) before becoming The Song Company’s Artistic Director (1990-2015) as well as Music Director of Sydney Metropolitan Opera (1989-94) and the Hunter Orchestra in Newcastle (1990-97).

He currently divides his time between Canberra International Music Festival – where he has been Artistic Director since 2015 – and Ensemble Offspring, various projects, operatic and other, in Australia and overseas, both as conductor and pianist.
